How to: French Girl Beach Hair for Fall and Winter

Beach hair is one of the easiest and quickest hairstyles that suit almost everyone, striking the right chord between casual and sexy.  So why stop making beach waves just because summer has said sayonara until next year?  Don’t wait for your winter vacation to jump back into your favorite look. Done right, beach hair can be the perfect unfussy style for holiday parties and weekends alike.  The French have been doing it for years and would never want to appear like they spent too much time or attention on their hair.

Avoid the crunchy beach hair look by using the right techniques and products to create touchable waves.  Do not use a hairbrush at all or you will flatten out the waves and volume you are trying to create.  The first step is to apply mousse to your hair while it is still damp and then blow dry your hair by tossing it upside down.   The second step is to apply sea salt spray to your hands and then twist your hair into fairly large sections, twisting them in the same direction.  When the pieces begin to unravel the hair will fall into place.  Don’t brush or comb the hair but simply use your fingers to smooth the pieces slightly.  If your hair is extremely dry you can use a small amount of hair oil just on your finger tips along the outer edges of the twists to add a bit of shine, but be careful not to use to much as it will destroy the waves and make your hair look greasy.

If your hair was washed a few days ago, start with a dry shampoo applying it to your hair while flipped upside down and then use your hair dryer on low or warm to plump up the volume of your hair while brushing out the dry shampoo to remove any excess oils without leaving any residue behind.  Then follow the first two steps and voila.  Proceed to tell all your friends when they compliment your hair that you just woke up like this and spent exactly one minute on your hair.  Relaxed, easy, sexy, unfussy hair is perfect year round especially during the holiday time-crunch so channel your cool, inner French girl and leave the complicated styles and techniques behind.  Tres jolie!

Model Crush Monday - Supermodel Lakshmi Menon

“She’s dusky, flawless, and the true face of beauty”  Prabuddha Dasgupta

When it comes to exotic Asian supermodels Lakshmi Menon is the top of the list.  Born in Kerala, India in 1981, Lakshmi was scouted while studying at university in Bangalore.  After modeling for two years in India she was brought to Paris by Jean Paul Gaulthier to walk in his runway show, which led to campaigns for Hermes, and Max Mara and Givenchy.  High street brands like J. Crew and H&M quickly followed suit as she became one of the only Indian models to ever garner campaigns for both high fashion clients and mainstream.

Lakshmi's femininity and sensuality supersede her exotic beauty making her a favorite of fashion editors and photographers.  She was the first Indian model to appear in the Pirelli Calendar, in the 2011 edition photographed by Karl Lagerfeld.  In her decade-long career she has shot editorial and covers for international editions of Vogue, Elle, Bazaar, and in V Magazine, Dazed and Confused, and Allure.  She has ushered in a new era whereby exotic models from all over the world are gradually appearing more frequently on runways and in editorials and advertising.  It is so long overdue. Beauty is beauty and should be celebrated.

Model Crush Monday – Natalia Vodianova, aka Supernova!

Natalia Vodianova is one of those rare models who continues to rank amongst the top international supermodels year after year since she first broke into the modeling world at age seventeen.  Born and raised in Gorky, Russia, Natalia famously sold fruit at a market stall to support her single mom and two half sisters, one afflicted with cerebral palsy before joining a modeling agency at age seventeen. Now age 34 and the mother of five children, Natalia is the founder “Naked Heart Foundation” a charity that creates play areas for Russian children in urban areas, and provides support for families raising kids with disabilities.  Her famous “Love Ball”, a star-studded fashion world event raises funds to support the cause which has now opened over 90 playgrounds in Russia.  Her newest endeavor goes hand in hand with her charity projects, the new Elbi app with a “love button” that allows users to easily connect and donate to various charities worldwide.

Famous for her almost decade-long contract with Calvin Klein for jeans, lingerie, and the fragrance Euphoria, Natalia has appeared in some of the raciest of the brand's advertisements.  She has graced over seventy international Vogue covers, walked in over 400 runway shows, has been featured in four different Pirelli calendars, and been the face of brands from Guerlain, to Stella McCartney, to Moschino, to Theory.  She was reported to have made 8.6 million dollars in 2012 alone.

A model with a heart and a true purpose to make the world a better place is compelling enough, if she wasn’t one of the most beautiful, versatile, and inspiring models in the business.  It doesn’t hurt that even after five children she looks young and fresh and just as intriguing as ever!

Supermodel mini baby boom! Model Moms Inspire on Instagram

It’s a mini baby boom in the modeling world and baby bumps are watched by millions on Instagram.  In the past two weeks, two Victoria’s Secret angels welcomed their own little angels.  Behati Prinsloo gave birth to her first child, a little girl named Dusty Rose, and Candice Swanepoel welcomed her first born, a baby boy named Anacan.  The new moms join a long list of supermodels who have given “yummy mummy” a whole new meaning.

Having a baby used to signal the winding down of a modeling career, as it was assumed that giving birth would somehow ruin a model’s figure and distract her from her career.  Not so!  Today’s models are even more amazing after having their babies, with more sensual, womanly curves.  It is now completely normal for a model to start her family in her late twenties as they know that their career will pick up again and even expose them to a broader audience after they have kids. Modeling careers can go on indefinitely now and pausing to start a family no longer means an end of her career unless a it is a model’s personal choice.  It actually focuses a model’s energies into achieving more while working less in order to spend as much time as she can with her offspring, while providing for them at the same time.

I managed to keep my hand in the modeling world while I had my own three kids and wouldn’t change a thing.  I became a much more successful and focused model after starting my family, and with the great support of my agents and clients I have been able to maintain my career and achieve so many of my goals while raising my kids.  Some models, such as Adriana Lima, Doutzen Kroes and Heidi Klum have even walked runways – including in the epic Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show – only weeks after giving birth.  Many model moms like Kate Moss, Natalia Vodianova, and Sasha Pivoverova have appeared with their children in the pages of Vogue shot by legendary photographers in some of the most beautiful and memorable editorials ever.  The industry no longer dictates when or how a model can begin her family or influence how she raises her kids.

Here’s to yummy mummies everywhere!  Welcome Dusty Rose and Anacan!  We will be watching your moms’ Instagram feeds to share in their joy with their new little angels!
