Best Way to Hide and Conceal Pimples and Acne!

It never fails, a zit shows up the night before a special event or worse you break out before a big photo shoot. It is well known that celebrity A-listers like Cameron Diaz, Brittany Spears and Megan Fox struggle with acne issues.  Unfortunately with HD, 10 times zoom, these stars often get caught in the spotlight with no place for cover.

MEGAN FOX
So what can you do when a pimple shows up? Yes there is photoshop, but for those times when you can't walk into a room with photoshop, it's time to think like a makeup artist! With the right techniques you can cover up that zit so that no one will notice.

1. When you have a pimple one of your goals is to reduce the swelling and flatten it. First step is to try using ice or ibuprofen. Visine, offering the same vasoconstriction properties that get the red out of your eyes, can work on pimples too. Soak a cotton swab in Visine and hold it next to your pimple for 5 minutes.

If have time, an overnight, check out my post about what to use in {Get Rid of a Pimple Fast} it's the best secret tip I know that really works!

2. If it is oozing use a tinted blemish cream that covers and heals like Clearasil. If you've already popped it, moisturize the area so that it is not flaky or dry from products that you've used to previously treat it. You do want to try to dry out the little monster but without irritating it. Benzoyl peroxide is your best choice to help shrink it.

3. When you are choosing a concealer to cover a zit, pick a thick formula that is quite dry and use a very small, pointy concealer brush to cover it from all angles. It is best to use a makeup brush so that you can get into all the crevices that your finger cannot. Don't brush across but instead dab the concealer onto your little monster, then tap your finger on top to set. Use a green based concealer corrector followed by foundation to counteract redness. Don't choose a concealer that is lighter than your skin tone or you will just bring attention to the thing you are trying to cover up. Focus only on the pimple and not the surrounding area. After you are finished concealing you can blend out to your skin, but do not blend or touch the actual zit.

4. Next you will want to blot with loose powder to make sure that it remains hidden and the makeup doesn't slide off the pimple's oily surface. It's best to use an eyeshadow brush loaded with powder.

5. My very good friend and go-to makeup artist, Colleen Stone, recommends mineral makeup for pimples because she says it really covers without adding bulk. Because a zit is usually raised, you will still probably see it on your face but it will be much less noticeable when covered well. If your pimple is large you might notice that it casts a shadow too. Use a lighter color concealer underneath the bottom half where the shadowing is for an optical illusion to counteract this effect, before setting with powder.

  1. I have to say Cassandra Bankson is NOT a model! she's signed to no agency and only takes amateur modelling pictures that her boyfriend, a photography student, photographsfor 'fun' in every sense of the word. She's only a 'model' in her head and the most high profile gig she's done before her infamous 'Acne' foundation tutorial was a fashion show (Sponsored by the wet seal) at a San Francisco mall that she signed up for. Please don't confuse her with a 'professional model' - she's definitely not. She doesn't have the body, proportions, facial features (Let's be honest)to make it in the industry. Also on to her foundation tutorial, do you realize she used nearly '9' high end products that totaled to be almost $436 dollars! completely unnecessary, you can cover acne, even a severe conglobata form with Studio tech foundation from mac, a bit of dermablend and setting powder. What she used was an arsenal! and I bet hardly any of her 'subscribers' or viewers could afford these things so it's not like she was 'helping' anybody - those products are out of reach to the majority suffering from acne in the U.S especially in this economy. Her foundation application was also sloppy, amateurish and only appeared to 'work' due to the large volume of products and clever lighting. She also used 'HD' foundation which is a big NO NO for acne prone skin because of the amount of silica and dimethicone that can irritate the already inflamed pore enough to create new nodules and worsen the existing ones. This girl is ridiculously 'Novice' when it comes to makeup, especially for acne prone skin she literally knows nothing, she shouldn't be trying to teach anyone because she's still learning herself.

Severe Acne is also ridiculously treatable in women as opposed to men! (there's no need to slather your face in makeup) the root cause of aggressive acne in women persisting beyond the age of 20 is exclusively a predisposition to sensitivity to Androgens (even a regular amount) or androgen excess like in Polycystic Ovary syndrome 100% of the time. This can instantly be managed with spironolactone an androgen blocking drug, various birth control and eating a low gycemic load diet that aids in keeping insulin levels down and in turn keeps androgen levels in check. Accutane is futile in treatment with women with Acne and only is successful with men. Instead of trying to cover up the 'problem' the article should have been focused on how to treat the true androgenic nature of hormonal acne in women.

    1. Erm... why do you have to be so mean??

    2. What's up with all this hate & anger? Relax... She was just trying to help.

      Delete
    3. Wow........you just belittled her as much as you possibly could have? Uncalled for. I'm sorry, are YOU a model? Why does it really matter if you don't like her videos?

      Delete
    4. Dude, talk about making a mountain out of a molehill. It's obvious out of the two of you who the kinder person is, and in the end -that's- what counts. She's just showing people what helped her with her acne and that they aren't alone in what they're struggling with.

Also, Accutane works with women. I know not one but several women who have tried it and had it help greatly with their acne problem.

    5. Haha wow someone's very VERY jealous!!

      Delete
    6. Man--you sound like a jealous idiot. How do you know so much about this girl? You sound like a stalker. This girl wasn't every claiming to be a professional makeup artist. She was just giving advice on how she covers up her acne and damn--she does a pretty good job at it.

Also the article is called, "Best Way to Hide and Conceal Pimples and Acne." It's not called "How to Treat Acne." If that's an article you were looking for, then google it. Don't spam this thread with all your hate and complain about how it should be a completely different blog. No body likes a hater, and you're being a hater, so no body likes you.

    7. A person who models is a model whether or not they get paid to do so. Whether or not they are professional or attractive...

That aside, Bankson's routine works for her, but I find it contains far too much product. I love makeup artist Lisa Eldridge's video on concealing acne. Her "less is more" approach is far more flattering -- and still it COMPLETELY covers acne.

    8. I was going to respond immediately and say 'WHOA' you're a hater but it seems many have beat me to the punch. Did all that hating make you feel better about yourself?

      Delete
    9. Wow you're ridiculous. I am a woman and I was on Accutane when I was younger and it did wonders! What is you're problem? Why are you hating on her so much? Also, how dare you judge someone about their body, proportions and facial features. Man up and show us a picture of yourself....so we can see just how perfect you are or judge you accordingly. Seriously, why be so vain and judgmental and not have the guts to show yourself??

    10. Everyone else is like "You're a hater" and I'm over here like "That was SOOOOO funny!"
      Bhahahaha

    11. Even on Wikipedia and google, Cassandra Bankson is noted as an 'American Model'. Hate to burst your bubble, but considering 2 of the most informational correct websites on the internet called her a model, I'd say she probably is one.

    12. Cassandra was the Shop stopper in Bollywood actress and designer Soha Ali Khan's fashion show at Dubai .
It was all over the local papers here in Dubai .
      She's a model .
someone needs to buy you some cookies and milk to calm you down .

    13. wow.... Well obviously it is working on her. she never tried to make herself any better- if she did, she would act like she never had acne problems.

      Delete
    14. Considering the fact that she has modeled for numerous companies, modeled in New York's Fashion Week last year, and is known as a model on multiple internet sites I'd say she's a model. And even if she technically isn't, who gives a hell.

      Delete
    15. Cassandra is a doll with a darling personality. Girls/women with acne do. not. care. what sort of model she is. She is showing hope to people who may have had no hope until they see her video. Most of us will work to get the money we need to help and hide acne and scarring. If one thing she uses is too expensive, then a smart girl will look for the same kind of product that is affordable. Or buy one product at a time. And girls who go to sleep and wake up crying, do not need to read hateful comments. Learn some compassion and you will look beautiful, no matter the condition of your skin.

    16. Hey guys! Don't feed the TROLL! The TROLL is probably someone who knows Ms Bankson and is also trying to get into the modeling industry. By the way, I'm a woman and Accutane has worked on me - haven't had a breakout in 10 YEARS after only one 6-month round, so the TROLL doesn't know squat!

    19. I would just like to point out that not all acne in women over 20 is something easily treated. I have a blood clotting disorder which makes birth control for the hormones 100% out of the question. As for other pills my various other medications for my health cannot mix with what i've been recommended due to the possibility of stomach ulcers. This article was very helpful for me because I will most likely be suffering with acne for the rest of my life. There is no reason to be so cruel to a woman who was only trying to help. I know this is hard to believe but trying to cover acne is important to some people, especially those who can't seem to get rid of it. So yea I'm going to spend a ridiculous amount of money trying to cover it because i'm 21 years old with acne that won't seem to go away no matter what I do. Try being kind, it might work in your favor in the future.

Ok now for a real dose of help, ladies if you are like me and can't even afford these products, your best cheaper end drugstore/Walmart products that work really well are the line of Physician's Formula mineral makeup and tinted concealer. best of luck and always know you are beautiful regardless..

    24. Mebbe it's just me but your angry rant aside (and I'm pretty sure wasn't directed at the blogger)... I have to agree with you. 1) The word model is so loosely used it's useless. I used to work in fashion and would have to cast girls for shows or shoots and when someone walks in that isn't the right proportions or the right face, it's a huge waste of time. (I, obviously, am not claiming to be a model myself.) I'm coming from a business point of view.
      2) And you're absolutely right, piling on $400 worth of products will only aggravate your acne, plus you'll be out $400.
      3) It seems like many have lost another key msg in that treating acne needs to be internal and external. I get that this post isn't telling you how to care acne, but covering it up shouldn't continue to hurt your skin either. I've suffered from acne for just about 10 years now and know how it can eat away at your confidence. Which is why, if I have to use cover up, I would prefer it to be as gentle as possible.

So for everyone else that's screaming "hater", you've no doubt let your own emotions get the best of you. Isn't calling someone hater the same as thing you're berated them about? Hypocritical.

  6. orrect washing of the skin will eliminate oils and bacteria that can cause acne. However, when you already have serious acne breakouts, washing alone likely will not make it go away. Frequent and harsh washing can even make it worse.

  8. Actually you should NEVER use ice on acne, and this especially bad advice for cystic acne sufferers! For years I used ice and some of the pimples would never fully go away. Til I do a 2 year beauty therapy course, if you have a real angry pimple, big, red or just a big nodular or cystic acne you should hold on a cotton wool ball thats been dipped in hot (not too hot) water, and keep re dipping to keep it warm and holding on, pressing lightly, do this for at least 10 minutes (I do 30 night before) The reason is angry big acne that obviously has a lot of pus inside it needs to come out eventually and if you use ice it hardens the pus but if you use hot water it helps break down the pus by heating and melting it away. I add a drop of lavender or tea tree oil to my hot water too.

  9. Pimples are tiny skin lesions or inflammations of the skin. They usually develop after blackheads or whiteheads become clogged and infected. They may appear as deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) on the face, neck, chest, back and sometimes shoulders.
Before we begin to learn about how to prevent acne and pimples it is important to understand how pimples are formed.

  12. I tend to get really painful acne around my hairline and forehead, I think it's hormonal. I was using the Citrus Clear Blackhead mask - and it left my skin feeling really hydrated afterwards which is something I didn't expect, most likely due to the amount of essential oils in it. I really liked that. It didn't smell odd and felt nice upon application. The following day I noticed that all of the painful pimples on my forehead and hairline had dried out and everywhere else felt nice and soft.

  13. I tend to agree that the Cassandra person uses way too much makeup and that could possibly be the cause of the pimples not clearing up. My granddaughter suffers with acne. I think I will look for that Citrus Clear Blackhead mask. She has tried medications from her doctor and Proactiv, but it didn't really work.

Im looking for something to cover my acne fast because school starts in two days and we have picture day on that day and my acne is terrible! But anyways this was pretty helpful.thank you:-)

  17. First of all, thanks for the amazing tips. Second of all, that person who put the rude comment on obviously doesn't have acne and doesn't know how it affects people's life and self confidence. And does it really matter if she's a model or not? No. What matters is the fact that she is trying to help people out there who suffer from acne. How rude to pick at people like that on how pretty they are because even though the hater may think that she isn't pretty, she has a pretty heart and it is not fair to go picking like that on someone who is trying to help thousands of people, and in a matter of fact, has helped thousands of people. so hater, stop being so horrible and don't bother searching about how to cover acne if you want to know how to get rid of it.

  19. I apply the Citrus Clear Spot Treatment it to new red acne spots and leave it on. I can see the redness fades right away and the next day it becomes very light. Last year I had a serious break-out and used tons of skin care products and my face was still full of dark spots, for a whole year. They disappeared within two months after using the Citrus Clear products.

  21. I've used everything, and even went to the Derm for internal/external treatment. I was Acne free for a few months, but then it all came back.

I've tried all kinds of "cures". Birth control triggered my Melesma, and had to discontinue that even though the ance cleared up. Tell me if it's a good trade off: clear acne and fast growing hyper pigmentation plus weight gain... no thanks

I have had problems with cystic acne since I was 16, and other acne since 12. I'm nearly 30.

To me, ANY thing that can help me cover my scars, acne, and melesma is welcome. I'm no model, through I have the proportions to be one. My face was never clear, so I figured that I was too ugly to book any job.

    Any help is appreciated.

  22. My guess is I'm probably the oldest poster on this thread and I hate to say it, but at 66 years old, I'm still dealing with acne/rosacea. When I was 30 I never thought I'd be concerned about my vanity in my sixties, but here I am. Currently on another doctor prescribed topical which isn't working so far. But would like to highlight one comment brought up by the original poster at the beginning, the one everyone is coming down on. The point was made that a low glycemic diet might help alleviate acne - I think that's something everyone on here might want to look into. It keeps insulin levels down and in turn regulates androgen levels. I think high androgen is what causes the inflammation that stimulates breakouts. Just Google low glycemic diet and you'll find listings of foods to avoid. I did this last week and have started eliminating some of the foods from my diet, which, if nothing else, has made me feel better.

  23. For the people talking about the comment on Cassandra up there... can we not gang up on the commenter (him or her?)? I mean, I get that you're upset, but when I read the thread, all I see is a person who tried to warn people about the credibility of the advice- giver (Cassandra), and a whole bunch of other people who are actually more nasty to the commenter than the commenter him/herself was to Cassandra. Not only that, everyone was literally saying the same thing. It was like everyone was trying to conform to the "moral standards" of everyone else... I personally don't see a need to say anything more than once, especially if it was criticism. So please, don't return hate with hate..... please....

  25. You have to use Citrus Clear products - they are totally NEW. I have been using the Citrus Clear Control Moisturizer and the first thing I noticed when I applied it to red and angry spots - it did sting for a few seconds but settled down again very quickly. By the next morning, the size and prominence of the spot had significantly reduced and I was pleased enough with these results already, it meant I would not have to put on a mountain of make up to hide the spot!!

I applied a little more of the Citrus Clear Moisturizer in the morning and to my amazement by the time I had got home from Uni the spot had all but gone. They are the newest and the best !

Once I became pregnant I had to stop trying harsher products and I tried dermalmd blemish serum. It took about a month for me to see a difference but I haven't had a huge pimple since it started working (about a month, maybe more)! I will definitely continue using this post pregnancy.
